Pesona Bau Nyale (The Bau Nyale Charm Festival)
This unique tradition is held annually on the 20th day of the 10th month in the traditional Sasak Calendar which falls around February every year. The smell in the Lombok language means “catch” and Nyale is a type of sea worm that only exists around the time of the year.
For people on the beautiful island of Lombok, the Bau Nyale Festival is an ancient tradition that is closely related to the legend of Princess Mandalika.
According to local legend, Princess Mandalika from the kingdom of Tunjung Beru has a very beautiful face. His father, Raja Seg held a contest for young men to fight for his daughter’s marriage. However, Mandalika himself opposed inter-royal arguments and bloodshed in his name. So he jumped into the sea, advising people in Lombok to live in peace and promised to return on the 20th of the tenth month in the Sasak calendar. On a long-awaited day, only the Nyale worm that glowed could be seen everywhere in the sea and therefore, people believed that the worm was the reincarnation of Princess Mandalika.
The Bau Nyale Charm Festival, or the tradition of catching sea worms that appear once a year, will be held in the KEK Mandalika Seger Beach area, Central Lombok Regency, NTB, on February 20, 2019.
