This event was a collaboration for more than a decade between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Sekar Manggis Foundation to disseminate the importance of diplomacy as a means of peace as widely as possible.
The event was opened by Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Mahendra Siregar and attended by approximately 200 guests, consisting of Indonesian national figures and Ambassadors of friendly countries. Also present were Meutia Hatta, Chair of the Jury this year.In his remarks, the Vice Minister stated that the awarding ceremony was a promotion of the achievements and results of Indonesian diplomacy, a message of the importance of Indonesian diplomacy as a means of peace, while also served as a tribute to Indonesia's central figures who have played a major role in diplomacy."Mr. Jusuf Kalla is a superior negotiator and the pride of all of us. His works have been proven in humanitarian missions and peace efforts," said the Vice Minister.
The Sekar Manggis Foundation was founded by a national hero, Dr. Ide Anak Agung Gde Agung, who had served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Home Affairs during President Soekarno's administration. The Award for Excellence in Diplomacy was inspired by the belief of Dr. Ide Anak Agung Gde Agung that is reflected in his motto that diplomacy means peace.
Presenting Dr. H. Muhammad Jusuf Kalla with this award was a form of recognition of his important contributions in the world of diplomacy, both nationally and internationally, in solving various problems, such as conflicts in Aceh, riots in Poso, and the disputes between Muslim Pattani and the Thai Government in Southern Thailand.
Other Indonesian national figures who have received this award include Muhammad Hatta, Adam Malik, Mochtar Kusumaatmadja, and Ali Alatas.
