In a statement in Jakarta, Friday (10/07/2020), he explained that Lake Toba which becomes one of the super priority tourism destinations has been certified at world level by UNESCO Global Geopark (UGG) so that it will be increasingly popular in international level, which most importantly, it benefits the surrounding communities.
“Lake Toba can be a source of income for the communities that has a high potential to be developed into destinations. Combining three main potentials namely geodiversity, biodiversity, and culture diversity, it has an important role in sustaining the tourism sector,” Wishnutama said.
He explained that through the development of sustainable geo-tourism, it is expected that the surrounding communities will have the opportunity to improve their culture, local products, and create wider employment opportunities.
“This determination gives an opportunity as well as responsibility for Indonesia to push the economic development and sustainable tourism in the surrounding areas,” he added.
The Toba Calderra or popularly known as Lake Toba itself is designated as the UNESCO Global Geopark at the 209th Session of the UNESCO Executive Council in Paris, France, Tuesday, July 2, 2020.
The Toba Caldera made it to the UNESCO list after being assessed and decided by the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council on the International Conference of the 4th UNESCO Global Geoparks in Lombok, Indonesia, on August 31 to September 2, 2019.
